During the last 10 years, the mission of the Erickson Foundation has been to promote and advance the work of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. (1901–1980). This has been accomplished in a variety of forums: international congresses, conferences, seminars, regional workshops, the Milton H. Erickson Center for Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, the Evolution of Psychotherapy conferences, and publications, including the proceedings of the congresses, newsletters, and the Ericksonian Monographs. Since 1981, at each of the annual congresses, conferences, and seminars, the foundation has asked invited faculty members to demonstrate their clinical work. The demonstrations are among the most popular events at the meetings and are videotaped for later study.

October 29, 1989 marks the tenth anniversary of incorporation of the Milton H. Erickson Foundation, Inc. With this issue of the Ericksonian Monographs we offer an exciting complement to this anniversary. For this volume, we solicited the six invited faculty of the tenth anniversary conference to select their favorite videotaped demonstration and comment upon it. The six faculty members are Joseph Barber, Ph.D., Stephen G. Gilligan, Ph.D., Stephen R. Lankton, M.S.W., William Hudson O’Hanlon, M.S., Ernest L. Rossi, Ph.D., and Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D. For added perspective, we also asked each faculty member to comment on another faculty member’s demonstration.

The chapters in this volume were not subject to the normal editorial board review process but, rather, represent the complete and unabridged transcriptions for those demonstrations and the 12 commentaries.
